The 25th annual SandCastle Days October 5th -7th on South Padre Island is happy to welcome back The Unlitter Campaign's 4th annual TRASH ART CONTEST. Picking up trash not only improves your neighborhood, but also provides the unlitterer with FREE sculpture materials. The competition is open to everyone, just as long as your sculpture is free-standing and made of trash you saved from our beaches, roadsides and garbage dumps.
The trash sculptures will be displayed at the 'Trash Art Gallery' at Clayton's Beach Bar and judged by a People's Choice voting in three categories - Artists age 12 & under ($50), Artists age 13-17 ($50), and the rest of us ($100).
Cash Prizes sponsored by Gaudi Realty.
Start by Unlittering yourself some free art supplies SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 22nd at one of three fall Adopt-a-Beach Clean-ups happening that morning from 9 - 12 at Isla Blanca Park & SPI Beach Access #3. Then come by SPI ART Space (1817 Padre Blvd.) at noon for a FREE TRASH ART SEMINAR where previous contest winner Don York will help guide you through the process of making your own prize winning trash art sculpture.
Write your name and phone number on a recycled gallon jug and attach it to your sculpture, this will hold your People's Choice voting stubs. Bring your entry to the 'Trash Art Gallery' by noon Friday October 5th for display through Sunday. At the end of the event, participants may chose to have their sculptures auctioned off to benefit the Unlitter Campaign or recycle them in their own fashion. Environmental activist and artist Nancy Marsden says “the Trash Art Contest is a fun way to bring about awareness of our litter problem and hopefully make us more mindful of our impact on the environment.
”Winners will be announced at the always hilarious Trashion Style Show happening before the SandCastle Days Awards Ceremony at Clayton's Beach Bar. Ms. Marsden is the original design genius behind the Trashion Show and the 2012's “Best of Trashion” event will feature elegant and sporty garments made from discarded umbrellas, boogie board skins and tent bags, all rescued from the beach on one of Nancy’s daily walks. See local fashion mavens model this season's favorites - designed entirely of materials saved from our landfills!
Previous entrants of the Trash Art Contest include Karmen Shaw, Dina Saldana, David Cohen, Lori Brass, Nancy Marsden, Allison Harrelson, the Platzers, Froggy and Nathan Conrad. As 2011’s Trash Art Contest Winner Don York says “the idea is to learn that things can be recycled and it’s important to teach an ethic that says we should always leave places better than we found them and never leave trash behind.” Don't miss it!
